Hon'ble Mr. Justice Ram Labhaya
Tenure: 1949 - 1957

Justice Ram Labhaya served as judge of the Gauhati High Court from 3-1-1949 till 21-1-1957.

Served as acting Chief Justice from 22.11.1952 till 9.2.53.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Holiram Deka
Tenure: 1951 - 1961

Justice Holiram Deka, the first Assamese Justice of the Gauhati High Court was also an accomplished story writer. He served as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court from 3-1-1961 to 29-6-1961. His published works include Alokaloi Sithi and Jotkinchit.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice G. Mehrotra
Tenure: 1957 - 1961

Justice G Mehrotra served as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court from 30.6.1961 till 6.2.1967.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice S. K. Dutta
Tenure: 1961 - 1968

Born on 31st January, 1908. He was educated at Dibrugarh Govt. High School, Presidency College, Calcutta, University College, London and Middle Temple, London. He was enrolled as Advocate of the Calcutta High Court in December 1933 and practised there till October, 1935 when he shifted his practice to District Court at Gauhati. He was the Principal of the Government Law College, Gauhati, from 1937-1950 and Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Law in the Gauhati University from 1st November, 1948, in addition to his other duties as Legal Remembrancer, Government of Assam from 23rd December, 1950. He was appointed as District and Sessions Judge from 7th September, 1955. He was appointed as Permanent Judge of the Assam High Court from 25th February, 1961. He was the Chief Justice from 08.03.1968. He retired on 30th January, 1970.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice C. S. Row Nayudu
Tenure: 1962 - 1967

Justice C S Row Nayudu served as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court from 7.2.1967 till 7.3.1968.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Parbati Kumar Goswami
Tenure: 1967 - 1970

Born on Jan 1, 1913, son of Bamdeb Goswami and Jogada Devi. Education - English School, Sibsagar; Cotton College and Earle Law College, Gauhati. He was the winner of Gunabhiram Barooah Silver Medal. Became Judge, Supreme Court of India since 10th September 1973. He joined Bar at Dibrugarh in 1938. He enrolled as an Advocate, Calcutta High Court, 1943; Govt. Pleader and Prosecutor, 1947- 49; enrolled Senior Advocate, Supreme Court, September, 1953. He was a Member, State Law Commission during period 1958-67, State Bar Council and its Disciplinary Committee, 1962 - 1967; Judge, Assam Nagaland High Court, May, 1967. He was the Chief Justice, Assam and Nagaland High Court, Jan. 31, 1970 and also of Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura on January 21, 1972. Was Acting Governor, Assam and Nagaland from Dec. 70 - Jan. 71. He was a Member, World Association of Judges, Geneva. He was the founder of All-Assam Lawn Tennis Association. While at the Bar connected with several educational institutions and intimately with J.K. Ghosh Kindergarten School. Retired on 01.01.1978.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice M. C. Pathak
Tenure: 1967 - 1973

Born at Barpeta Town in the then Kamrup District of Assam. His father was late Gobinda Chandra Pathak. The family use to carry out the function of reciting religious books in the Barpeta Satra. His maternal grandfather practised as a Mukhtar in Barpeta Court during British time.
Justice Pathak started his initial education in Barpeta Dalahati Lower Primary School and Barpeta Dakhinhati Lower Primary School.
In 1925, he was admitted in Class III of Barpeta Govt. High School. While studying in the Govt. High School, he participated in the Satyagraha against the Cunningham Circular of British Govt. and he was convicted with 2 months rigorous imprisonment and was lodged in Gauhati District Jail. After being convicted, when he along with others were expelled from the Govt. English High School local people established a private English High School, “Barpeta Vidya Peeth” for the such expelled students who joined in quit India movement and Sri Pathak took admission in the said High School in 1930. The founder Head Master of the school was Dr. Jagadish Chandra Medhi who later became Advocate General of Assam for a long term.
Justice Pathak passed his matriculation examination from the Calcutta university in the year 1933. He secured second rank in the Assam Valley in the said examination. Since Barpeta Vidyapeeth was established as a private school during the quit India Moment, in spite of his merit, he was deprived of any Govt. scholarship for his higher studies. With tremendous financial hardships, he got admitted in the Cotton College, Gauhati in 1933 and passed I.A. in the first division with letter marks in Sanskrit in the year 1935. He graduated from Cotton College with High Second Class with honours in Philosophy.
In 1937, he got admitted in the Earle Law College at Guwahati and passed B.L. examination of the Calcutta University. After competing B.L. examination, he joined as Assistant Teacher in Kamrup Academy School and worked there for almost 3 years.
In 1938, he worked for few months as a sub-editor of “Assam Sebok” an Assamese Nationalist weekly.
In 1944, he joined the Gauhati Bar as a probationer under Late Holiram Das, a distinguished civil lawyer of that time. He got the Pleader’s licence from the Calcutta High Court on 16th January 1945 and started practice in the District Court at Gauhati. After independence in 1947, when the Assam High Court was established, he was enrolled as an Advocate of the Assam High Court in 1949 and thereafter was enrolled as an Advocate of the Supreme Court in 1956. Since 1953, he was attached as a junior advocate of Late Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, Bar-at-law who also started his practice in the Assam High Court. Late Ahmed become Advocate General and later joined Assam cabinet and eventually become President of India. In 1960, Justice Pathak was appointed junior Govt. of Advocate of Assam and become Senior Govt. Advocate in 1963. Justice Pathak was also a part-time lecturer of University Law College, Guwahati from 1960 to 1963 and was Standing Counsel of the Income Tax Deptt for the North Eastern Circle from 1963-1967.
Justice Pathak was appointed as Additional Judge of Assam and Nagaland High Court in August 1967 and appointed as a permanent Judge in May 1968. He was appointed Acting Chief Justice of Assam and Nagaland High Court in 1973 and appointed permanent Chief Justice in January 1974.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Dibyendu Mohan Sen
Tenure: 1969 - 1976

Justice D.M. Sen, the first Indian Judge Advocate General of independent Indian Army celebrated his 100th birthday on 06 February, 2014. Justice DM Sen graduated with Honours Degree in Law from Kings College, London, in 1939 and thereafter completed his Bar at Law from Middletown Temple College, United Kingdom. At the outbreak of World War II, he was enrolled in the British Army and was enlisted as a Private in the Royal Scots. Two months later he was selected for a commission in the Indian Army. After the required training as an officer cadet, he got commissioned in the First Punjab Regiment on 15th November,1942.
Justice Sen was later promoted and appointed as the first Judge Advocate General of the Indian Army from 1st April 1948 to 07th February 1957, and was one of the pioneers of military law in the Post Independence India. The veteran officer has served with officers like, British-Commander-in Chief General Roy Bucher, General SPP Thorat, Field Marshal KM Cariappa, General Rajendra Sinhji, General SM Srinagesh amongst others. After retirement from Army he was appointed as Advocate General of Nagaland, he was elevated as Judge of Gauhati High Court on 21.08.1969. He retired as a judge of the High Court on 06.02.1976. He is responsible for revising the old Indian Army Act, 1911 and has given it a new shape, as we know it today, making it more relevant for Army.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Bhola Nath Sarma
Tenure: 1971 - 1978

Born on 1st January, 1916, Justice Sarma obtained his law degree from Ripon Law College, Kolkata and enrolled as an advocate on 31.03.1950. Justice Sarma practiced in civil, criminal and revenue cases in the district courts of Jorhat. He joined Assam Civil Service Class-I in May, 1950 and Assam Judicial Service in 1955. He served as Registrar of High Court of Assam and Nagaland from July, 1969 to February, 1971. He was elevated as a judge of the High court on 12th February, 1971 and retired on 1st January, 1978. He was the first Director of the North Eastern Judicial Officers Training Institute. He died on 25.09.2008 at the age of 93.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Ram Singh Bindra
Tenure: 1972 - 1974

Born on 1st January, 1913. He studied at Khalsa High School, Sukho (Distt. Rawalpindi) Khalsa College, Amritsar and Law College, Lahore. He joined the Punjab Judicial Service in April, 1933 and was promoted to the Grade of District Judge in April, 1966 in November, 1962. He was appointed as District Judge in April, 1966. In November, 1965, he was appointed as Additional Judicial Commissioner, Goa and thereafter as Judicial Commissioner for Manipur and Tripura. He retired from the State Judicial Service on 31st December, 1970 and continued to function as Judicial Commissioner of Manipur and Tripura till he was appointed as Judge of the then Assam and Nagaland High Court (now Gauhati High Court) on 20th January, 1972 (A.N.). He retired on 31st December, 1974.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Baharul Islam
Tenure: 1972 - 1979

Born on 1st March, 1918. Educated at Gurdon High School, Nalbari District, Kamrup, Assam, Cotton College, Gauhati and Aligarh Muslim University. Enrolled as an Advocate of the Assam High Court in 1951 and as an Advocate of the Supreme Court in 1958. Elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1962 and for a second term in 1968. Practised both in the Supreme Court as well as Assam High Court. Appointed Judge of the then Assam and Nagaland High Court (Now Gauhati High Court) on 20th January, 1972 (A.N.). Appointed acting Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court on 11.3.1979. Appointed as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court on 7.7.1979. Retired on 1st March, 1980. Appointed Judge, Supreme Court of India on 4.12.1980. Retired on 1.3.1983.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice D. Pathak
Tenure: 1973 - 1980

Born on 1.3.1924. He obtained B.A. degree from the Calcutta University in 1946 and LL.B. degree from the Gauhati University in 1953. In order to prosecute further studies in Law, he went to United Kingdom. From London University he obtained LL.M. degree in 1957. Prior to obtaining the post graduate degree, he became Bar at-law from Lincoln’s Inn in 1956 and on completion of the advanced studies he returned to India. He was enrolled as an Advocate in the Assam High Court in April 1958. From 1961 he also started to conduct cases before the Supreme Court of India.
Mr. Justice Pathak was a part-time Law Lecturer of the Law College of Gauhati University since 1958 and became the part time Principal of the said college for 3 years before his elevation to the Gauhati High Court. He has contributed immensely to the legal literature by writing articles and books. Elevated as judge of the Gauhati High Court on 8.8.1973. Served as Acting Chief Justice from 1-3-1980 to 17-4-1983. Elevated as Chief Justice from 18.4.1983 till 8.8.1983. Transferred as Chief Justice of Orissa High Court on 11.8.1983. Retired on 28.2.1986.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice K. M. Lahiri
Tenure: 1975 - 1986

Justice Kiranmoy Lahiri was born on December 29, 1924 to Hemanta Lahiri and Renuka Lahiri. His grandfather Lalit Mohan Lahiri and his uncle Probodh Lahiri  were all eminent lawyers of their time. Justice Lahiri was a brilliant student who completed his early education in Cotton Collegiate School and then joined Bengali High School. He obtained his law degree from Earle Law College, Guwahati. Justice Lahiri was a talented sportsman and he excelled in athletics, cricket, football, volleyball, lawn tennis, badminton and bridge. Justice Lahiri was appointed as Judge, Gauhati High Court on 19.11.1975. Appointed as Acting Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court on 09.08.1983. Elevated as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court on 03.11.1986.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice M. S. Swami
Tenure: 1976 - 1977

Born on 06.04.1916. He studied at St. Joseph’s College, Bangalore and Law College, Pune. He was enrolled as an Advocate on 21.11.1941. He joined the chambers of Shri M. Narayana Rao. He was the Government Pleader between 1952 and 1955. He was appointed as Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court (then Mysore High Court) on 02.06.1967 and Permanent Judge on 10.12.1969. He was transferred to the Gauhati High Court on 24.06.1976. He was appointed as Acting Chief Justice on 01.07.1977 and Chief Justice on 01.10.1977

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Seshe Iyengar Rangaranjan
Tenure: 1976 - 1977

Born on 09.09.1916. He studied at National School, Tiruchirapalli; National College, Tiruchirapalli Law College, Madras. He took Master’s Degree from Madras University in Constitutional Law and International Law. He was enrolled as Advocate, Madras High Court on 04.04.1938. He was appointed as District and Sessions Judge in October, 1952 and Director of Legal Studies under the Government of Madras in July, 1962. He was again appointed as District and Sessions Judge from January, 1967 till he was appointed as Permanent Judge of Delhi High Court from 20th January, 1969. He was transferred to Gauhati High Court from 22.06.1976. He was re-transferred as Judge, Delhi High Court on 18.07.1977. He retired on 08.09.1978.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice N. Ibotombi Singh
Tenure: 1976 - 1984

Born on 1st March, 1923. Having received his initial education at Imphal he shifted to Gauhati and joined Cotton College. He graduated in Law from Calcutta University and was enrolled as a Pleader on 19th April, 1950 in the Judicial Commissioner’s Court, Manipur. He was enrolled as an Advocate on 14th September, 1955 and was made Senior Advocate of the High Court in March 1976. He was appointed as Advocate General of Manipur on 21st January, 1972 which office he held till his elevation to the Bench as a Permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 21st September, 1976.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice K. N. Saikia
Tenure: 1979 - 1986

Mr. Justice K. N. Saikia, Born on1st March, 1926 at Simaluguri Bharalua Gaon in Sibasagar District of Assam. Early education in Nazira High School. Graduated in first class, Commerce from J.B. College, Jorhat in 1947 and secured first class first position in M.A. (Commerce) examination of Calcutta University in 1949. Appointed as Lecturer in Commerce (Evening Classes) in Gauhati University in 1950. Passed LL.B. Examination of Gauhati University in 1954 securing first class first position. Enrolled as Advocate of Gauhati High Court on 18.4.1955. Having passed the examinations, he was admitted as Associate Member of the Corporation of Certified Secretaries, London in 1956. Promoted as Reader in Commerce (Evening Classes) in 1957. Passed LL.M. Examination of Gauhati University 1959. Professor of Commerce of Gauhati University in 1964. Joined as Professor of Law in Dibrugarh University (Evening classes) on 14.12.1966 and permitted to appear in Court. Resigned in 1969 and devoted to whole-time practice in Gauhati High Court. Did Civil, Criminal, Revenue and Constitutional cases. Appointed as part time Professor of Law in LL.M. Classes of Gauhati University in 1976. In 1978 he was appointed as Chairman of the Assam Land Reforms Commission. Published several books on Commerce and Law. Appointed as permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 12.2.1979. Was Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court from 20.12.1986 to 1.3.1988 (Acting from 20.12.1986 to 13.6.1987). Appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of India from December 14, 1988. Retired on 28.2.1991.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Banwari Lal Hansaria
Tenure: 1979 - 1990

Born on 25th December, 1931. Admitted Advocate to the Bar Council of Assam on 25-9-1962. Lecturer in J.B. Law College, Gauhati from August 1969 to April 1971. Appointed District and Sessions Judge from 4.5.1971 (A.N.) Legal Remembrancer and Secretary to the Government of Assam Judicial Department from 15-7-1976 to 9-2-1979. Written a number of books and articles on Law. Appointed Permanent Judge of Gauhati High Court on 12-2-1979. Appointed as Chief Justice of Orissa High Court on 22-02-90. Appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 14-12-93. Retired on 25-12-1996. Died on 03.11.1997.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Syed Maquaddas Ali
Tenure: 1981 - 1984

Born on 1st March, 1922. He joined Tripura Civil Service in 1948 as Munsiff Magistrate on 01.04.1950. He was appointed as a Subordinate and Assistant Judge in 1965 and as an Additional District & Sessions Judge in March, 1969. He was appointed as a District & Sessions Judge on 31.01.1978. He was appointed as Permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 20.04.1981. He retired on 01.03.1984.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Tarun Chandra Das
Tenure: 1981 - 1989

Born on 16.08.1926 in Barpeta. He matriculated from the Nalbari Gordon High School and after graduation, obtained his LL.B. degree from the Lucknow University in 1954. He started legal practice at Guwahati in 1954 in the Chamber of late Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed, the first President of the Gauhati High Court Bar Association, who later became the President of India. He was elevated as a permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court in 20.4.1981 during his roaring practice and after a reputed service he retired on 01.02.1989. Post retirement, he was appointed as the First Lokayukta of Assam in 1989. He was also the Chairman of the Legal Services Authority, Meghalaya and also a member of the Human Rights Commission of Assam. Late Justice Tarun Chandra Das has also been the Ex-Chairman, Oil Selection Board (North East).

Hon'ble Dr. Justice Thir Narayan Singh
Tenure: 1982 - 1985

Born on 20th March, 1931. He was enrolled as Advocate of the Gauhati High Court in 1954. He worked as Government Advocate Assam for nearly a decade. He was appointed as Additional Judge, Gauhati High Court from 6th December, 1982, and as permanent Judge from 10.01.1984. He was transferred from Gauhati High Court to Madhya Pradesh High Court w.e.f. 16.05.1985. He retired on 20.03.1993. He expired on 21.05.2022.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Shafiqul Haque
Tenure: 1984 - 1991

Born in the year 1930 at Dibrugarh, Assam. Late Justice Haque did his schooling in George Institute, Dibrugarh and after his completion of his graduation in the year 1949 from Islamia College, Calcutta; he joined Aligarh Muslim University to complete his master degree in economics and law in the year 1952. Justice Haque joined Dibrugarh Bar Association in the year 1953-54. He joined Assam Judicial Service in the year 1957. He was promoted as District and Sessions Judge in the year 1971. He was elevated as judge of the Gauhati High Court in the year 1984 and retired as the Acting Chief Justice in the year 1992.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice R. K. Manisana Singha
Tenure: 1984 - 1994

Born on 2nd February, 1932. He was enrolled Pleader in July, 1956 and Advocate in July, 1958. He worked as Government Advocate-cum-public Prosecutor of Manipur from 19th October, 1972 to 20th October, 1974 as Standing Counsel of Income Tax department from 29th April, 1975 to 29th November, 1979. He was appointed as permanent Judge, Gauhati High Court on 21st November, 1984. He served as Acting Chief Justice from 25.05.1992 to 29.05.1992 and 12.12.1993 to 26.01.1994. Elevated as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court on 27.01.1994. He retired on 01.02.1994.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Sailendu Nath Phukan
Tenure: 1985 - 1994

Born on 1.4.1937. Joined Jorhat District Bar as Pleader in the year 1960 and hereafter enrolled as an Advocate in 1962 and joined the Gauhati High Court Bar in the same year. Appointed to the Assam Judicial Service in the year 1963 and continued till May, 1976, in that service. Joined the Government of Meghalaya on deputation from July, 1970, and worked as Under Secretary, Deputy Secretary and Secretary in the Law Department. Became Law Secretary and Legal Remembrancer in January, 1976. Appointed as a part-time Member of the Meghalaya Board of Revenue and part-time lecturer, Shillong Law College. Commissioner for departmental enquiries for the State. Legal Adviser of various corporations of the State Govt. Appointed as Permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 11.10.85. Transferred to Himachal Pradesh High Court on 30.9.94. Appointed as Chief Justice of that High Court on 1.3.95. Transferred to Orissa High Court on 02.8.1996. Appointed as a Judge of Supreme Court of India on 28.1.1999. Retired on 31.3.2002.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Jagat Mohan Srivastava
Tenure: 1986 - 1992

Born on 22nd August, 1930. He worked as Pleader in the Allahabad High Court from 1953 to 1956. He joined Uttar Pradesh Civil (Judicial Branch) Service as Munsif with effect from 3rd July, 1957, and worked as such upto January/ February, 1964. He was promoted as Civil Judge and worked as Civil & Assistant Sessions Judge upto October, 1975 and was absorbed permanently as Secretary, Law and Judicial. He also worked as Secretary, Labour since 1972-73, Secretary, Parliamentary Affairs since 1978-79, Chief Electoral Officer, Arunachal Pradesh since October, 1977 and Member, Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal since 1981-82. He was appointed as permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 23.07.1986. He retired on 22.08.1992.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Jangsan Sangma
Tenure: 1986 - 1995

Born on 01.03.1933. He worked in the Office of the Gauhati High Court since 1951 for about 16 years in different Sections of the Office of the High Court including Bench Assistant to the Hon’ble Court. He resigned on 30.11.1968. He enrolled as Advocate on 02.12.1969 and practised as such before the High Court, District Court and Tribunals. He was appointed as District Judge, Shillong (Meghalaya) on 06.03.1980. He was appointed as permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 23.07.1986. He retired on 01.03.1995.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice S. P. Rajkhowa
Tenure: 1988 - 1988

Born on 1st April 1932 at Mangaldoi. He passed HSLC from Govt. Boys H.S. School in 1950 and B.A. from St. Anthony’s college, Shillong. He completed his MA in English and LLB from Guwahati University in 1963. In 1974 he was directly recruited as District and Sessions Judge and posted at Nagaon. Justice Rajkhowa was elevated as Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 11th April, 1988. He was later transferred to Calcutta High Court in the month of November 1988. He retired in the year 1994.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Swadesh Kumar Hom Chaudhuri
Tenure: 1988 - 1994

Born on 01.03.1934. He Joined Service in the Indian Audit and Accounts Department of Shillong and resigned thereafter. After enrolment in August, 1970, joined the Assam and Nagaland High Court Bar and has since then been practising in the Gauhati High Court. He was appointed as Judge in the Gauhati High Court on 05.12.2988 till 26.4.1994. He was transferred to Patna High Court w.e.f. 28.04.1994. He retired on 01.03.1996.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Y. Ibotombi Singh
Tenure: 1988 - 1992

Born on 01.02.1930. He was appointed as Sub-Deputy Collector 2nd Class, Manipur, in 1959 and as a first-class Magistrate in 1964. He was also appointed as Munsiff Magistrate (Manipur Judicial Service Grade III) in 1965 and as a Sub- Judge/ Assistant Sessions Judge (Manipur Judicial Service Grade II) in 1972. He was appointed as Additional District Judge / Additional sessions Judge, Manipur in 1974 and as a Presiding Officer, revenue Tribunal, in 1976. He functioned as Law Secretary and Chief Electoral Officer, Government of Manipur from 1977 and appointed as District and Sessions Judge in 1979. He was appointed as Judge in the Gauhati High Court on 05.12.1988. He retired on 01.02.1992.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Dr. B. P. Saraf
Tenure: 1989 - 1991

Born on 23-8-1939. Enrolled as an Advocate of Assam High Court in 1963 and practised in the High Court since then. He specialised in Taxation and Company Law. He was Senior Standing Counsel of the Income Tax Department for the North Eastern region. Appointed as Permanent Judge in the Gauhati High Court from 2-1-1989. Transferred to Bombay High Court on 11-12-1991. Appointed as Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court on 21-2-2000. Retired on 23-8-2001.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice W. A. Shishak
Tenure: 1989 - 2000

Born in 1941 at Shangshak village in Ukhrul district of the state of Manipur. He completed his graduation from Gauhati University in 1963. He passed LL.B. from Delhi University in 1965 and started practice in Gauhati High Court in 1967 and shifted to Nagaland in 1970. He served as a Senior Government Advocate for the Government of Nagaland for 7 years. He was the President of the Nagaland Bar Association. Shishak became Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 2.1.1989. On 4th December 2000 he was elevated to the post of the Chief Justice in Chhattisgarh High Court. He became the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court on 24th January 2002. Justice Shishak was retired on 1st January 2003.

Born on 03.06.1949. He is son of late Shri Gopal Chandra Patnaik, a leading businessman with great repute in Orissa. He had his schooling at Rajkumar College, Raipur. He was awarded prize for the "Best All Round Conduct and Leadership" in School. He had higher education from Delhi University with Honours in Political Science and obtained Law Degree from Madhusudan Law College, Cuttack. He was selected by the Rotary Foundation in Group Study Exchange Programme in 1976 and went to New Jersey, U.S.A. for study of institutions of America and its people. He was enrolled with the State Bar Council of Orissa on 28.03.1974. He practiced in the High Court, Subordinate Courts and Tribunals in Orissa and also appeared many a times before the Supreme Court of India. He practiced in different branches of law with specialization in Commercial Law and Constitutional Law. He was the Standing Counsel for the Orissa State Road Transport Corporation from 02.05.1989 to 01.09.1990 and has been the Senior Standing Counsel for the Commercial Taxes Organization, Government of Orissa from 22.09.1990 to 12.01.1994. Born on January 3, 1946. He was enrolled as an Advocate on May 12, 1972 and designated as Senior Advocate on January 25, 1994. He practised for 4 years from May 1972 to February 1976 in Subordinate Courts before joining Tripura Judicial Service in March 1976. In April, 1982, he left the Judicial Service and resumed the legal practice. Since 1982, he was practising in the High Court and District Courts at Agartala in Civil, Criminal, Constitutional, Land, Revenue and Service matters. He had also worked as Advocate General of the State of Tripura from November 7, 1991 to May 15, 1993. He was appointed as a Permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court on November 15, 2000. Obtained LL.B. and LL.M. from Gauhati University (G.U.) in the year 1974 and 1982 respectively. He was enrolled as an Advocate with Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh on 9.8.1974 and since then practised in Civil, Criminal, Constitutional, Service and allied matters for 26 years in the Gauhati High Court at Guwahati and other outlying Benches in the North East including the Subordinate Courts. He was Government Advocate and Additional Public Prosecutor, State of Assam in 1983-86 and also Additional Central Government Standing Counsel in 1991-1994 in the Gauhati High Court. Born on December 23, 1943. He was enrolled as an Advocate on February 15, 1975 and designated as Senior Advocate on June 3, 1999 by the Gauhati High Court. He practised since 1982 in the Gauhati High Court & Lower Courts in Constitutional, Civil, Criminal & Service matters. He was appointed as a Permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court on November 15, 2000. Retired on 22.12.2005. He expired on 30.05.2012.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Ranjan Gogoi
Tenure: 2001 - 2010

Born on 18th November, 1954. He was enrolled as an Advocate on August 28, 1978 and practised for the last 21 years in the Gauhati High Court in Constitutional, Taxation and Company cases. He was appointed as Permanent Judge of Gauhati High Court on 28th February, 2001. Transferred to Punjab & Haryana High Court on 9th September, 2010. Appointed as Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court on 12th February, 2011. Elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court on 23rd April, 2012. Appointed as the Chief Justice of India on 03.10.2018. Retired on 17.11.2019. He was nominated as Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha on 16th March 2020, by the President, Shri Ram Nath Kovind. On 19th March 2020, he took oath of office as a nominated Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Amitava Roy
Tenure: 2002 - 2013

Born on 1.3.1953 at Kolkata, West Bengal. He belongs to a family of lawyers. His father Late Anadi Bhushan Roy was a practicing Senior Advocate of repute at Dibrugarh in the State of Assam. His Father-in-Law, Late Salil Kumar Dutta had been a Judge of the Calcutta High Court. His brother-in-law, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Dipankar Dutta was a Judge of the Kolkata High Court. He did his education at Dibrugarh. After completing post graduation in Physics from the Dibrugarh University, he obtained his LL.B. degree from the same University in 1976.
Justice Amitava Roy was enrolled with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh on 20.02.1976. He had extensively practiced before the district courts in the Districts of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia from 1976 to 1981. He shifted his practice before the Gauhati High Court in 1981 and since then appeared before the Gauhati High Court, the Central Administrative Tribunal, Gauhati and the District Subordinate Courts at Gauhati. He practiced mainly on the Civil, Criminal, Constitutional, Labour and Revenue side. He had also been the Senior Government Advocate of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh in the Gauhati High Court from 1991 to 1996. He was a member of Assam Law Commission till his elevation. He was designated Senior Advocate by the High Court on 03.06.1999.He was elevated as a Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 04.02.2002 and was appointed as Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court and took oath as such on 2.1.2013. Thereafter he was transferred and appointed as Chief Justice of Orissa High Court on 06.08.2014. On being elevated he took oath as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 27.02.2015

Born on August 1, 1942. He joined Assam Judicial Service on April 23,1970. He worked as Additional District & Sessions Judge, Cachar And Silchar and as District & Sessions Judge, Nalbari, Hailakandi, Dhubri and Nagaon He also worked as Presiding officer, STAT and Member, M.A.C.T and as Principal Judge, Family Court at Kamrup, Guwahati. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on March 4, 2002. Retired on 31.07.2004.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Iqbal Ahmed Ansari
Tenure: 2002 - 2013

Born on 29th October, 1954, at Tezpur (Assam), he did his B.Sc. from Darrang College, Tezpur. He was a good debater and was awarded the trophy for the best literary competitor of his college. He did his graduation in law from Tezpur Law College, where his father, a Bar-at-Law himself, was founder Principal. He handled both civil as well as criminal matters as a lawyer. He remained deeply involved with the activities of All Assam Lawyers Association and many other socio-cultural and educational bodies. He was also President of Tezpur Lions Club. He has been a life member of Indian Institute of Public Administration. He joined Grade-I of Assam Judicial Service in April, 1991 and, having worked as District & Sessions Judge, at Karimganj, Dibrugarh and Nagaon. He became Registrar General of Gauhati High Court. He underwent training on the subject of Gender and Law, in Warwick University in UK, on being nominated by National Judicial Academy headed by Chief Justice of India. Blessed with analytical intellect and reforming imagination in equal measures, utmost judicial rectitude and judicial courtesy have been his hallmarks from the very beginning of his judicial career. He was elevated to the Bench of Gauhati High Court as Judge on 4th March, 2002. Retired on 28.10.2016. He was the Judge In-charge, North East Judicial Officers Training Institute, with the responsibility of training Judicial Officers. He served as Executive Chairman of State Legal Services Authority in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland and has accordingly performed the duty of legal awareness, legal education and free legal aid by holding legal awareness camps. He has presented papers and delivered lectures in many seminars all over the country. He has delivered lectures at police training Institutes, Judges Training Academies and Army War College on various aspects of law and Judicial Governance Programmes. He, on being nominated by the Chief Justice of India, attended Judicial Governance Programme, at Singapore. He chaired the session on corporate criminal liability at the commonwealth lawyers conference. Justice Ansari is known for a combination of law for liberty and passion for justice and to his credit has the privilege of being one of the Judges in the Country having the highest number of reported Judgments which are very often quoted as authorities in judicial proceedings.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Tinlianthang Vaiphei

Born on 01.03.1956. Passed B.A. in 1976 from Nowrosjee Wadia College, University of Poona. Obtained LL.B. Degree from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi in 1979. Enrolled in the Bar Council of Assam on 22nd August 1980. Started law practice in the Courts of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Munsiff and Deputy Commissioner/District Magistrate in Churachandpur District of Manipur in the year 1980.
Started appearance in the Court of District & Sessions Judge, Manipur in Criminal and Civil cases both in the Original and Civil sides in the year 1983 and also before the Revenue Tribunal and Motor Accident Claim Tribunal, Manipur. Specialized in Constitutional Law, Public Law and Service Matter. Started practicing in the Imphal Bench of the Gauhati High Court in 1990. Acted as Conciliator in the State as well as District level Lok Adalats in Manipur in 1989, 1992 and 1994. Shifted place of practice to Mizoram in 1997. Empanelled as Defence Pleader in Mizoram on 16th October, 1998. Appointed as Asstt. Advocate General of Mizoram on 12th February, 1999 and as Public prosecutor for High Court on 8th March, 1999. Further, appointed as Public Prosecutor for Aizawl District and Essential Commodities Act on 8th April 1999 & 14th June 1999 respectively and also acted as Prosecuting Counsel for Court Martial Proceedings, Assam Rifles, Aizwal in the year 1999.
Appointed as Addl. Advocate General, Mizoram on 15th September, 2000. Designated as Senior Advocate on 22nd February, 2001. Appointed as Legal Advisor of the Mizoram Co-operative Apex Bank on 9th February, 2001. Elevated to the Bench as Additional Judge, Gauhati High Court on 17.07.2003 and was made Permanent Judge on 28.02.2005, thereafter appointed as Chief Justice (Acting) on 21.10.2015. His Lordship on transfer took oath as the Judge of High Court of Tripura on 16.05.2016.His lordship took oath as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Tripura on 21st September, 2016 and retired on 28th February, 2018 on superannuation.
Justice Vaiphei is currently serving as the Chairperson of Assam Human Rights Commission.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Biplab Kumar Sarma
Tenure: 2003 - 2016

Born on February 1, 1954 at Guwahati, Assam. His father late Surendranath Sharma was a thinker, prolific writer and was known for his philanthropic activities and philosophic articulation. Shri Sharma obtained his B.Sc., M.A. and LLM. degrees from Gauhati University. He joined the Bar in September, 1977 and practiced in the Gauhati High Court and its subordinate courts. He also practiced in the Guwahati Bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal since its inception in 1985. Specialised in Service, Constitutional and Contractual matters, he was the Standing Counsel of the Indian Railways since 1987 both in the Gauhati High Court and Central Administrative Tribunal, Guwahati Bench. He conducted cases for State Bank of India (SBI) and Bongaigaon Refinery Camp Petrochemicals Ltd. (BRPL) as Special Counsel. He also conducted cases of Labour Department, Government of Assam as its Special Counsel. He was also engaged as Special Counsel for Revenue Department, Government of Assam and was a Standing Counsel of Director of Land Records, Government of Assam. Earlier he represented the Government of Assam in the Forest Department as its Special Counsel. He was designated as Senior Advocate in June, 1999. He has been associated with the Gauhati Law Times, a monthly Law Journal, as its sole Advisor since 1995 and was also a visiting faculty in the Assam Administrative Staff College. Since 1984 he was involved in law teaching in the Department of Law, Gauhati University. He was elevated as the Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 2.12.2003 and retired on 31.01.2016.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Ram Bhawan Misra

Born on August 7, 1951. He was enrolled as an Advocate on January 5, 1986. He practised in the Delhi High Court and in the Supreme Court of India since 1986 in Civil, Constitutional, Taxation, Labour & Service matters. At times appeared in the Allahabad High Court and also at the Lucknow Bench. He was appointed as a permanent judge of the Allahabad High Court on April 24, 2001. Transferred to the Gauhati High Court on January, 2005. Retired on 06.08.2013.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Hirendra Nath Sarma
Tenure: 2004 - 2011

Born on 1st of February 1949. Graduated in Science from M C College, Barpeta and graduated in Law from J.B Law College, Guwahati. Was President of the Law College Students Union. Enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh on 2nd February, 1976. Attended the Chamber of Mr. K. M. Lahiri, Senior Advocate (As he then was, later on retired as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court) while was a student in the Law College. Had practiced in the original Civil, Criminal, Revenue, Labour and Service Courts/Tribunal and in the High Court in Constitutional, Civil, Criminal, Labour and Service matters. Was Government Advocate for Assam Government since 1979 for about fifteen (15) years intermittently, both in civil and criminal side. Appointed as Additional Senior Government Advocate, as same in the year 1996 and continued in that position till July 1999. Defended the State Government in various complicated civil, constitutional and tax matters. Thereafter also was engaged by Government of Assam as a Special Counsel to defend important tax and other matters. Was the legal advisor of the Assam Co-operative Apex Bank Ltd., a state level Co-operative Bank from 1984 to 1996. Was also the legal advisor of the Co-operative City Bank Ltd., Guwahati since 1983 for about 21 years, till elevation to the Bench. Was the legal advisor of Tata (Elxsi) Ltd., a Company of Tata Group, for Assam. Was Guest Lecturer of J B Law College and the College of Professional Studies, Guwahati. Was examiner for LL.B. Course under the Gauhati University. Was Legal Advisor of the Assam Cricket Association, a Company of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.Had extensive practice in all branches of law in original/appellate side as well as in the Assam Board of Revenue and High Court Designated as Senior Advocate on 3rd June 1999. Elevated as Additional Judge of the High Court on 1st November 2004. Became Permanent Judge w.e.f. 27.02.2006. He served as the Member (Judicial), Armed Forces Tribunal, Guwahati and also the Chairman of High Level Committee to regulate the Fee Structure and Admission Process etc. of Unaided Institutions/Colleges. He is currently serving as the President of Arunachal Pradesh Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. Retired on 31.01.2011.

Appointed as Standing Counsel for Govt. of Tripura since 1993 in Gauhati High Court and Central Administrative Tribunal, Guwahati Bench. Appointed as Senior Counsel, National Insurance Corporation and Central Bank of India for last few years. Appointed as Senior Counsel in the Commission of inquiry, appointed under the Commission of Inquiry Act, enquiring about the about the 'Tehelka Tapes'. Was the Legal Advisor of Assam Cricket Association, a unit of Board of Control for Cricket in India. Had intensive practice in constitutional matters, civil matters, labour and service matters, company matters etc. Invited and admitted as life associate member of Indian Red Cross Society. Was a co-opted member of disciplinary Committee of Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, etc. Designated as Senior Advocate on 3rd June, 1999. Was Legal Advisor and Standing Counsel of Assam Fisheries Development Corporation Ltd., Standing Counsel of North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), Legal Adviser of Assam State Development Corporation for Schedule Castes Ltd. (SCDC) and Ex-Standing Counsel of ASCARD Bank Ltd. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on November 1, 2004. He served as the President of Tripura State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. Became permanent judge w.e.f. 27.02.2006. Retired on 31.01.2008.

Stood First in order of merit in the competitive examination held by the MPSC in1976 for recruitment to the MJS Grade III. Appointed in Grade III of MJS on 26.02.1977. Born on 01.02.1954 in a lawyer's family. Graduated in Science from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, in the year 1974 and obtained LL.B. Degree from Lucknow University in the year 1977. Enrolled as an Advocate in 1978 and started practice in the Gauhati High Court as well as Sub-ordinate Courts. Practiced successfully in Civil, Criminal, Service and Constitutional matters in the Gauhati High Court and Supreme Court of India. Was one of the youngest Advocate, designated as "Senior Advocate" in the history of the Gauhati High Court. Was the Counsel of Manipur University for a period of six years. Served as Legal Advisor of the Central Agricultural University, Imphal. Participated successfully in different Enquiry Commissions for the Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. Of India and the Police Deptt., Govt. of Manipur. Was a Senior Member of the Supreme Court Bar Association, New Delhi. Served as Advocate General of Manipur (Cabinet Status) from 14.01.1998 to 27.03.2001. Elevated as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 25.11.2004. Became permanent Judge w.e.f. 27.02.2006. He took Oath as the Judge of the High Court of Meghalaya on the 23rd March, 2013. He demitted the Office on the 31st January 2016. Currently serving as President of Manipur State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. Retired on 31.01.2016.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Zelre Angami

He was born on 01-05-1946. He completed his B.Com from Gauhati University. He studied M.A (Economics) & LLB from Dibrugarh University. He was enrolled as advocate of the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, etc. on 18-01-1972. He was appointed as Junior Govt. Advocate and Public Prosecutor for the State of Nagaland from 1977-1981, Standing Counsel and Public Prosecutor from 1981-1983 and Senior Govt. Advocate and Public Prosecutor from 1983-1988. He was the Joint Legal Remembrancer and Ex-Officio Joint Secretary from 1988-1991, Addl. Legal Remembrancer and Ex-Officio Addl. Secretary from 1991-1995 and Legal Remembrancer and Ex-Officio Secretary from 1995-2003 under the state Government of Nagaland. He was appointed as Additional Judge, Gauhati High Court from 22-03-2006, and as permanent Judge of Gauhati High Court from 25-03-2008. After his retirement, he was appointed as the Chairman of 1st Nagaland State Finance Commission, President of Nagaland State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission and the Chairman of NSA Advisory Board for the State of Nagaland.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Utpalendu Bikas Saha

Born on 25th August, 1954 in a middle class family of Udaipur, South Tripura. Did his schooling from K.B. Institution, Udaipur, passed B.A. from Bir Bikram Evening College, Agartala and completed MA (Journalism), LL.B. from Calcutta University. Enrolled as an Advocate on 6th June, 1978. Had practiced specially Constitutional, Service, Administrative, Civil and Criminal matters in the Gauhati High Court at Agartala Bench, Subordinate Courts in Tripura as well as at Principal Seat at Guwahati. In the year1983-84 elected, as, Assistant Secretary of Tripura Bar Association, Agartala and in the year 1986 and 1993 elected as Member of the Executive Committee of the said Bar Association. Since 2004, he was Secretary, High Court Bar Association, Agartala, Tripura, was the Joint Secretary of All India Lawyers Union. Associated with Ram Thakur Law College, Agartala and Tripura Govt. Law College, as Part-Time Lecturer. Held the Office of the Government Advocate, Tripura since 1993 till his elevation and also held office of the Public Prosecutor of Tripura, Gauhati High Court, Agartala Bench, in the year 1993 for 6(six) months and then resigned. Designated as Senior Advocate in the year 1999 and since then functioned as Senior Government Advocate. Delivered Lectures in number of Seminars on important subjects and topics of National Interest. Elevated as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 12.10.2006. Became Permanent Judge w.e.f. 15.07.2008. Took oath as Judge of Tripura High Court on 23.3.2013 and retired on 24th August, 2016 on superannuation. Retired on 24.08.2016.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Ketulhou Meruno
Tenure: 2006 - 2013

Born on 11th March, 1951. Enrolled as an Advocate on 28th August, 1979. Practiced about 26 years in the Kohima Bench of the Gauhati High Court and other Sub-ordinate Courts in the North Eastern States. Held the post of President, Nagaland Bar Association for three consecutive terms of three years each. Served as Junior Govt. Advocate of Nagaland during 1980-1983. Also held the Office of the Central Government Standing Counsel since 1994 and thereafter appointed as Senior Central Government Standing Counsel in1997 till elevation, which is now re-designated as Assistant Solicitor General of India. Elevated as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 12th October, 2006. Became permanent Judge w.e.f. 15.07.2008. He expired on 03.12.2013.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Hrishikesh Roy
Tenure: 2006 - 2018

Justice Hrishikesh Roy was born on 1st February 1960. Obtained his LL.B Degree from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi in 1982. On 21.12.2004 he was designated as Senior Advocate by the Gauhati High Court.
Justice Roy was sworn-in as an Additional Judge of Gauhati High Court on 12.10.2006 and served as permanent Judge with effect from 15.07.2008. As the senior-most Puisne Judge of the Gauhati High Court, he served as Judge-in-charge, Administrative Department (JAD) and also the Chief Justice’s delegatee Judge, under Section 11 of the Arbitration and conciliation Act 1996. While heading the Mediation Monitoring Committee, the film Shako (Bridge) was produced and this film is used as a training tool in the Mediation programmes. The Arunachal Pradesh Legal Services authority led by Justice Roy, produced Apne Ajnabi, a short film on racial discrimination which highlights how legal help can be provided to the victims.
As the Executive Head of the Assam State Legal Services Authority, Justice Roy had implemented the “Reach Out & Respond” programme to facilitate access to justice, for the marginalised sections of Assam. He was in charge of the Assam Chapter of the Indian Law Institute (ILI). Justice Roy was spearheading the training programmes for the Judicial Officers under the Gauhati High Court and was nominated as a member of the National Judicial Academic Council, headed by the Chief Justice of India. The News Letter ATMAN was being published regularly under Justice Roy’s editorship, for the Gauhati High Court. On 8th of August, 2018 Justice Hrishikesh Roy was sworn-in as the 35th Chief Justice of the High Court of Kerala. He was transferred earlier on 29.05.2018 from the Gauhati High Court and was serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court since 30.05.2018.
He was elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 23 September, 2019.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Basu Deo Agarwal
Tenure: 2006 - 2014

Born on 17th June, 1952 at village Chaparmukh, District Nagaon (Assam). Practiced in the Gauhati High Court since September, 1977 to April, 1991.Thereafter, joined the Judicial Service of Assam in the month of May, 1991 in the rank of Additional District Judge. On 1st of March, 1992, appointed as District and Sessions Judge. Worked in the same capacity at different stations. During these 29 years of judicial career, he had the occasion to attend various training courses, which includes 6 weeks training at University of Warwick, Coventry, United Kingdom on the subject Gender & Law. He has also attended many Seminars and work-shops and has also participated in different Training and Orientation courses as resource person on different subjects, like Gender & Law, Domestic Violence, Court Management, Human Rights and Child Rights etc. He has written many articles relating to criminal justice system and on other subjects, which have been published in journals like AIR, Criminal Law Journal, Bi-annual journal published by National Police Academy, Hyderabad etc. He has been appointed as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 12th October, 2006. Became Permanent Judge w.e.f. 15.07.2008. Retired on 16.06.2014. He was the Chairman of One Man Commission of Inquiry to enquire into the circumstances leading to the killing of Priya Basumatary by suspected NDFB extremists on 20.08.2014 in Chirang District. He is currently serving as the President of Nagaland State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Mutum Binoy Kumar Singh

Born on 27th January, 1950. Enrolled as an Advocate on 20th September,1977. Practiced for about 17 years before entering into service before Subordinate Courts in Manipur and High Court. Was Standing Counsel of the Food Corporation of India, Manipur Spinning Mill before entering into Judicial Service.Worked as Addl. District & Sessions Judge and designated Judge(TADA) Manipur East w.e.f.18-11-94 to 6-4-1997; Judge, Family Court, Manipur and Presiding Officer, Election Tribunal (Panchayati Raj) Manipur, w.e.f. 7-4-1997 to 22-3-1999. While serving as Registrar, Gauhati High Court at Imphal Bench elevated as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 12.10.2006. Became Permanent Judge w.e.f. 15.07.2008.He served as the Chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Other Backward Classes. Retired on 27.01.2012.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Anand Prakash Subba
Tenure: 2007 - 2008

Born on 1st March, 1948. Did B.Sc, L.L.B. Enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura on 30th January, 1973. Practised in various courts in Nagaland and Sikkim between 1973 to 1975. Joined Sikkim Judicial Service as Civil Judge-cum- Judicial Magistrate in the year 1976. Was promoted to the post of Additional District & Sessions Judge in 1990 and to the post of District & Sessions Judge in 1994. Also functioned as Registrar, High Court of Sikkim between 1997 to 1999 and thereafter as the Registrar General of the same High Court between 1999 to 2004. Was given various assignments under Special Acts and other Acts between the period 1992 to 2003. Worked also as part-time lecturer in Sikkim Govt. Law College for over four years between 1980 to 1984. Attended 6 weeks training course on Gender and Law in the school of law, at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom in 1999. Elevated to the Bench of the Sikkim High Court as permanent judge on 04.10.2004. Retired on 28.02.2010.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Hareswar Baruah
Tenure: 2007 - 2011

Born on 01.11.1949. Passed HSLC Examination in the year 1965 from Hawajan High School, Dist - Sonitpur and graduated in Science from Darrang College, Tezpur in the year 1969. Did LL.B. from University Law College, Guwahati, in the year 1973. Enrolled as an Advocate of the Guwahati Lawyers Association in the year 1974 and thereafter became the member of North Lakhimpur Bar Association in the same year. Later, appointed as Assistant Public Prosecutor. Joined Assam Judicial Service on 23.05.1978. Became Registrar General of the Gauhati High Court on 07.11.2005. Became the President of Assam Judicial Service Association in the year 2004. Elevated as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 04.07.2007. Became Permanent Judge w.e.f. 03.07.2009. Retired on 31.10.2011.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Asok Potsangbam
Tenure: 2007 - 2011

Born on 21st April, 1949, in Imphal, Manipur. Obtained B.A. Degree from Calcutta University and LL.B. from Delhi University in the year 1974. Was the Secretary of the North East Unit of All India Bar Association, New Delhi. Held the Office of the Advocate General of the State of Manipur during the period from 09-06-1995 to 16-12-1997, 02-04-2001 to22-05-2001, 01-06-2001 to 11-03-2002 and from 10-12-2004 till his elevation as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 26-09-2007. Retired on 31.05.2013. He served as the President of Assam State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. He expired on 20.04.2022.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Pranoy Kumar Musahary
Tenure: 2007 - 2013

Born on 31st May, 1951 at Alokjhar, Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar District, Assam. Did his B.A. (Hons) from Saint Anthony's College, Shillong in 1973. Obtained his M.A. and LL.B. degrees from Gauhati University in 1975 and 1976, respectively. Enrolled himself with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh in1977 and started practice as an Advocate in the Gauhati High Court since1977. Practised mainly on Civil, Criminal, Constitutional, Revenue and Arbitration matters. He dealt with a large number of cases in TADA Court at Guwahati. Served as Standing Counsel of the Bodoland Autonomous Council from 19.11.1999 to 01.10.2001 and the Assam Plains Tribes Development Corporation Ltd. Served as Addl. Senior Govt. Advocate of Assam from 12.06.2001 to 13.09.2001. Thereafter he served as Senior Govt. Advocate and Public Prosecutor of the State of Arunachal Pradesh from 14.09.2001 to 18.02.2003 and also of the State of Assam from 19.02.2003 till his resignation on 24.09.2007. Worked as a member of the Assam State Law Commission till elevation. Ably represented before the Hon'ble Justice K.N. Saikia Commission of Inquiry as the Senior Counsel for the Govt. Of Assam. Earlier also represented Private Parties in the Hon'ble Mr. Justice S. N. Phukan Commission of Inquiry (Bhumka Gang Rape Case), Hon'ble Justice Manisena Inquiry Commission (Gohpur Riot) and Hon'ble Justice Haque Inquiry Commission (Kokrajhar Ethnic Clash). Elevated as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 26.09.2007. Retired on 30.05.2013. He is the first person from the ethnic Bodo Community to get elevated to the Bench of the Gauhati High Court. Currently serving as the Chairman, Meghalaya State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. He was sworn in as the first chairperson of the Meghalaya Lokayukta.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Arun Chandra Upadhyay
Tenure: 2008 - 2013

Born on 27th July, 1951. Belongs to a family of freedom fighter. Grandfather late Chabilal Upadhayay was a distinguished freedom fighter of Assam. Graduated in Science and obtained L.L.B Degree from the University of Law College under the Gauhati University.
Joined the Bar in 1976. Practiced mainly in the Gauhati High Court and the District Courts in Kamrup. Appointed in the Assam Judicial Service on 10.09.1980. Attended various training programmes, seminars and workshops as Judicial Officer and also participated as resource person in different training and orientation programmes such as Computerization in Judiciary, Court Management, etc. On promotion to Grade-I of Assam Judicial Service, appointed as Registrar (Inspection & Enquiry), thereafter as Registrar General of the Gauhati High Court and also as District & Sessions Judge in different Districts of Assam. He was holding the post of Legal Remembrancer and Secretary, Judicial Department, Government of Assam at the time of his elevation as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 28.12.2008. Became Permanent Judge w.e.f. 28.11.2011. Retired on 26.07.2013. He expired on 02.06.2020.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Chittaranjan Sarma
Tenure: 2008 - 2016

Born on 1st of March, 1954, Graduated in Science and obtained L.L.B Degree from the University of Law College under the Gauhati University. Enrolled as an Advocate in 1977 and started practice in the Gauhati High Court. Appointed as Munsiff in the Assam Judicial Service in 1980. Promoted and appointed as Grade I officer of the Assam Judicial Service in 2001. Served in various capabilities in the Assam Judicial Service and as Registrar General of the Gauhati High Court till the date of elevation to the Bench. Sworn in as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 28th December, 2008. Became Permanent Judge w.e.f. 28.11.2011. Retired on 29.02.2016. Justice Sarma also served as the Upa-Lokayukta of Assam.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Arup Kumar Goswami

Born on 11.03.1961 at Jorhat, Assam. Graduated in Economics (Hons.) from Cotton College under Gauhati University in 1981. Obtained LL.B. Degree from Government Law College, Guwahati in 1985. Enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh on 16.8.1985. Practiced mainly on the Civil, Criminal, Constitutional and Service matters. Was designated as Senior Advocate by the Gauhati High Court on 21.12.2004. Was Standing Counsel of the Gauhati High Court, Karbi-Anglong Autonomous Council and North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council. Had also been a Senior Standing Counsel, Education Department, Government of Assam.
Appointed as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 24.01.2011 and became a permanent Judge w.e.f. 07.11.2012.Was the Executive Chairman of Nagaland State Legal Services Authority from 01.04.2011 to 12.08.2013.Was the Executive Chairman of Assam State Legal Services Authority from 06.06.2018 to 14.10.2019 and the Executive Chairman of Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority from 08.03.2016 to 14.10.2019.Was Chief Justice (Acting) of the Gauhati High Court from 06.09.2018 to 29.10.2018 and also from 24.05.2019 to 06.10.2019.Was Editor of ATMAN, a Biannual News Bulletin of the Gauhati High Court, from October, 2018 to 14.10.2019.
Was the Secretary General of the Gauhati High Court Bar Association for the period 2000-2001. Represented Assam in Ranji Trophy. Also represented East Zone in Under-19, Under-22 and at the senior level. Appointed as Chief Justice of the High Court of Sikkim w.e.f. 15.10.2019. On transfer, assumed charge of the Office of the Chief Justice, High Court of Andhra Pradesh w.e.f 06.01.2021.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice A. K. Goel
Tenure: 2011 - 2011

Born on July 7, 1953 at Hissar, Haryana, His Lordship did his B.A. (Hons.) and LL.B. from the Punjab University, Chandigarh. He was enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana on July 16, 1974. He practised before the High Court of Punjab and Haryana for about five years and before the Supreme Court of India and Delhi High Court for about 22 years. He also worked as Standing Counsel and Addl. Advocate General for the State of U.P. in the Supreme Court and as Standing Counsel (Civil) for NCT Delhi in Delhi High Court. He practised in different fields of law: Civil, Criminal, Labour, Taxation, Constitutional Law. Designated as Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court with effect from February 11, 1999. His Lordship was elevated as Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court with effect from July 2, 2001. Appointed Executive Chairman, Haryana State Legal Services Authority on 17.05.2005.
His Lordship was the Chief Justice (Acting) of the Punjab and Haryana High Court from 02.05.2011 till he joined as the senior most Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 12.09.2011. Sworn in as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court on 20th December, 2011. He also served as the Chairperson of the National Green Tribunal.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice N. Kotiswar Singh

Born on 1st March, 1963 at Imphal, Manipur, to (Late) Justice N. Ibotombi Singh of the Gauhati High Court, who had also served as the first Advocate General of Manipur and Smt. N. Gomati Devi.

On completion of his schooling from Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, Purulia, West Bengal and Pre University Course in Science from St. Anthony’s College, Shillong, graduated from Kirori Mal College, Delhi University with B.A. (Hons.) in Political Science in 1983. Obtained his Degree in Law (L.L.B.) from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University in 1986. Enrolled as an Advocate in 1986. Attended the six months’ “Commonwealth Young Lawyers’ Course” under the University of London in 1992.

After a brief practice in the Supreme Court of India, shifted practice under the Gauhati High Court, the then common High Court of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh. Also practiced in the Central Administrative Tribunal, Guwahati and the Subordinate Courts in Manipur. Was the Standing Counsel for various Government Departments, Government of Manipur, and public undertakings/institutions. Also appeared before a number of Commissions in Manipur constituted under the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952.

Designated as a Senior Advocate by the Gauhati High Court on 31.03.2008.Served as the Advocate General of the State of Manipur from 03.11.2007 till elevation to the Bench.

Sworn in as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 17.10.2011 and as a Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 07.11.2012. Appointed as a Judge of the Manipur High Court upon its creation with effect from 23.03.2013. Appointed to perform the duties of the office of Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur w.e.f 01.07.2017 till 08.02.2018, again from 23.02.2018 till 17.05.2018.

Participated in the World Congress on Justice for Children from 28-30 May, 2018 at UNESCO, Paris. Was part of the 8(eight) High Court Justices team to attend “Workshop on Counter Terrorism Phase-II Training” at Washington DC and Orange County, California from 10-14 September, 2018.

On transfer to Gauhati High Court, assumed charge as a Judge, Gauhati High Court on 11.10.2018. Presently, Executive Chairman of the Assam State Legal Services Authority and Central Authority member of National Legal Services Authority and a member of the Governing Body of National Judicial Academy, Bhopal.

Appointed to perform the duties of the office of Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court w.e.f. 21.09.2020 to 09.01.2021, from 09.05.2022 to 22.06.2022 and from 12.01.2023 to till elevation as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh on 15/02/2023.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Ujjal Bhuyan

Born on 2nd August, 1964 at Guwahati. His father Suchendra Nath Bhuyan was a Senior Advocate and a former Advocate General of Assam. Did his schooling in Don Bosco High School, Guwahati and thereafter studied in Cotton College, Guwahati. After graduating in Arts from Kirori Mal College, Delhi, he obtained his LL.B. degree from Government Law College, Guwahati and LL.M. degree from Gauhati University, Guwahati.
Was enrolled on 20-03-1991 with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh. Had practiced before the Principal Seat of the Gauhati High Court at Guwahati and appeared before the Agartala, Shillong, Kohima and Itanagar Benches of the Gauhati High Court. Also practiced before the Central Administrative Tribunal, Guwahati Bench and the Assam Board of Revenue. Appeared before the Labour Court, Guwahati, various Civil Courts and the State Consumer Forum, Arunachal Pradesh.
He was the Standing Counsel of the Income Tax Department for long 16 years; starting as Junior Standing Counsel since May, 1995 and subsequently appointed as Senior Standing Counsel of the Income Tax Department on 03-12-2008. He was the Additional Government Advocate, Meghalaya in the Principal Seat of the Gauhati High Court from April, 2002 to October, 2006. He was engaged as Special Counsel of the Forest Department, Government of Arunachal Pradesh from December, 2005 to April, 2009. Appointed as Standing Counsel of Gauhati High Court on 03-03-2010. Designated as Senior Advocate by the Gauhati High Court on 06-09-2010. He was appointed as Additional Advocate General, Assam on 21-07-2011.Was a member of Gauhati High Court Bar Association; Lawyers Association, Guwahati; Bar Association of India; All India Federation of Tax Practitioners; and Indian Law Institute, Assam Chapter.
Appointed as Additional Judge of Gauhati High Court on 17th October, 2011 and confirmed on 20th March, 2013. He is also the Executive Chairman of Mizoram State Legal Services Authority.
Justice Ujjal Bhuyan is closely associated with the Judicial Academy, Assam and National Law University, Guwahati. Transferred to Bombay High Court and took oath on 03.10.2019. He had worked as senior most Judge of The Telengana High Court. Took oath as Chief Justice of The Telegana High Court on 28/06/2022. 

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Swapan Chandra Das

Born on 16th March, 1955. Graduation from Belonia College and LL.B.from University College of Law, Kolkata. Enrolled as an Advocate on 27th February, 1981. Practised in Civil, Criminal & Revenue branches of law both in original and appellate jurisdiction in the District Courts of South Tripura & other Subordinate Courts. While practising as an Advocate, also worked as a part time Lecturer of Commercial and Industrial Law in the Govt. Degree College at Udaipur. Also worked as Govt. Pleader of South Tripura District and a panel / retained Lawyer of different banks and insurance companies/ corporations. Was a member of District Bar Association, Udaipur and also held the post of the Secretary, District Bar Association. Also, was involved in Consumer movement and was Secretary of Consumer Protection Association, South Tripura District while working as a Lawyer. Joined in Grade-I at Tripura Judicial Service as a direct recruit on 18.02.1991. Worked in different capacity as Chief Judicial Magistrate, Additional District & Sessions Judge, L.R. & Secretary (Law) and Legislative department of Govt. of Tripura and also as District & Sessions Judge. Elevated as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 17th October, 2011. Retired on 15.03.2017. Took oath as Permanent Judge of High Court of Tripura on 13-09-2013 and retired on 15th March, 2017 on superannuation.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Prasanta Kumar Saikia

Born on 26th January, 1954. Graduated in B.Sc. from Nagaon College in 1974 and L.L.B. from Nagaon Law College under Gauhati University in 1978. Enrolled as an Advocate of Nagaon Bar Association in 1979. Joined Assam Judicial Service on 5th September, 1980 and has held various posts in Judicial Service including Special Judge, CBI, Guwahati and Registrar General, Gauhati High Court. Elevated as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 17th October, 2011. Retired on 25.01.2016. Served as a Member (Judicial), National Company Law Tribunal, Guwahati Bench. Sworn in as Chairperson of Arunachal Pradesh Lokayukta on 27th June, 2019.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Subhasis Talapatra
Tenure: 2011 - 2013

Born on October 4, 1961 at Udaipur,Tripura. Did his graduations in Arts and Law from University of Calcutta. Was enrolled with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh on September 12, 1990. Practiced mainly at Agartala Bench of Gauhati High Court and appeared in catena of constitutional, civil and criminal matters. Was designated as Senior Advocate on December 21, 2004. Was sworn in as an Additional Judge of Gauhati High Court on November 15, 2011. He took oath as Permanent Judge of High Court of Tripura on 13.09.2013 and officiated as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Tripura w.e.f. 02-11-2018 to 13-11-2018 and 11-11-2019 to 15-11-2019.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Sudip Ranjan Sen

Born on 9th March, 1957 at Shillong in the State of Meghalaya. Did his schooling and college in Shillong. He obtained his LL.B. degree from the Shillong Law College under NEHU. Started his service career as a School Teacher after obtaining the Degree of B.A. Joined the Bar on 28.03.1989. Practised in both civil and criminal matters. He was the Asstt. Public Prosecutor and Addl. Govt. Pleader of Meghalaya since 1997 till 7th July, 2000. Passed Meghalaya Higher Judicial Service Examination in 2000 and joined as Addl. Dist. & Sessions Judge on 10.07.2000. Became District & Sessions Judge in January, 2002 with special power to try cases under NDPS, PC Act, WAQF Tribunal,Land Acquisition. Became Selection Grade District & Sessions Judge in 2005. Awarded Super Time Scale in April, 2011. Worked as Registrar (Admin.) of the Gauhati High Court at Guwahati w.e.f. 01.12.2010 till 06.02.2012. Sworn in as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 06.02.2012. He took Oath as the Additional Judge of the High Court of Meghalaya on the 23rd March, 2013. On 7th January, 2014 he was confirmed as the Permanent Judge of the High Court of Meghalaya and demit the office on 8th March 2019.

Hon'ble Dr. (Mrs.) Justice Indira Shah
Tenure: 2012 - 2016

Born on 17th August, 1954. After completing M.A. and LL.B Degree from University Law College, Dibrugarh enrolled as an Advocate in 1978. On being selected by Assam Public Service Commission joined the Assam Judicial Service in 1980 and worked in various capacities in many districts of Assam and lastly as District Judge in Jorhat and Kamrup till the appointment as Registrar General on 01.11.2011. Awarded Ph.D. in the year 1995 by Dibrugarh University on the thesis “Women in Crime". First lady Registrar General and High Court Judge from the Judicial Service in the Gauhati High Court. Elevated as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 2nd March, 2012. Became permanent Judge w.e.f. 28.02.2014. Retired on 16.08.2016. She also served as President, Assam State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Nishitendu Chaudhury
Tenure: 2013 - 2016

Born on 1st February 1961. Did HSLC and HSSLC (Sc.) Course in 1976 and 1978 from Karimganj Government HS School securing First division. Did B.Sc. with Honours in Zoology from G.C. College, Silchar securing First Class First position. Did LL.B. from A.K. Chanda Law College in 1987 and then joined profession under Mr. N. M. Lahiri in Gauhati High Court. Did LL.M. from BRM Govt. Law College, Guwahati. Was elected as Member of the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland etc. in the year 2004 for 5 years. Elevated to the Bench as Additional Judge on 22nd May, 2013. Appointed as Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 20th February, 2016. He expired on 12.11.2016.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice K. Sreedhar Rao
Tenure: 2013 - 2015

Born on 21-10-1953. Enrolled as an Advocate on 24-02-1976. Practised at courts in Bellary District. Joined Karnataka Judicial Service as District Judge on 15.04.1988. Promoted to the Cadre of District Judge (Super Time Scale) on 23.11.1995. Appointed as Additional Judge of the High Court of Karnataka on 21-02-2000 and Permanent Judge on 16-05-2001. He was a member of Board of Governors of Karnataka Judicial Academy. Sworn in as Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 24.10.2013 and retired as Acting Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court on 20-10-2015.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Manojit Bhuyan
Tenure: 2015 - 2021

Born on February 5, 1959 at Guwahati to late Niron Bhuyan and late Parul Bhuyan, obtained Bachelor's Degree with Honours in English Literature from Cotton College, Guwahati in the year 1978. Thereafter, completed Masters in English from the Gauhati University. Spent early school years at St. Mary's Convent, Guwahati, St. Anthony's School, Shillong and finally at Don Bosco School, Guwahati from where he passed his Matriculation Examination. After a brief spell as a Civil Servant with the Government of Assam and thereafter as a Lecturer in English at D.K.College, Mirza, obtained LL.B. Degree in the year 1987, and in the very same year enrolled himself in the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh on 16.09.1987. He was designated as Senior Advocate on 04.08.2014. Practiced mainly on the Constitutional, Civil, Criminal and Service side and had represented Institutions like the Reserve Bank of India, SEBI, NABARD, GNRC Hospitals, besides others. Was appointed Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court vide Government of India Notification dated 06.01.2015. During his tenure as an Advocate had attended hosts of seminars and legal workshops organized by the National Legal Services Authority and the Indian Law Institute (Assam Chapter). He is also a trained Mediator having undergone the required 40 hour training at Guwahati under the aegis of Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee (MCPC) of the Supreme Court of India. Appointed as Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 3rd January, 2017. Retired on 04.02.2021. Presently, Justice Bhuyan is serving as Chairperson, Assam Real Estate Appellate Tribunal.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Paran Kumar Phukan
Tenure: 2015 - 2017

Born on 29th October, 1955 at Jorhat. Graduated in Science with honours in Chemistry from J.B. College, Jorhat. Served as Senior Laboratory Assistant in the Regional Research Laboratory, Jorhat from 1977 to 1983. Enrolled as an Advocate in the Tezpur Bar Association in 1983 and moved over to Guwahati in 1985. Joined as Munsiff in Assam Judicial Service. Promoted to the post of CJM in 1999. Promoted to Grade-I of the service and posted as Additional Sessions Judge (FTC) at Guwahati. Served as Registrar Administration, Gauhati High Court and thereafter as Presiding Officer, Labour Court. Then posted as District and Sessions Judge, Nagaon. After working for more than four years, posted as member, MACT, Kamrup, Guwahati and Presiding Officer, STAT, Guwahati. Elevated as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court with effect from 07.01.2015. Retired on 28.10.2017. He is currently serving as the President of Mizoram State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.

Hon’ble Mrs. Justice Rumi Kumari Phukan
Tenure: 2015 - 2022

Born on 01.07.1960 at Jorhat, passed BA (Hons in Economics) from JB College, Jorhat in the year 1981, obtained LL.B degree from Jorhat Law College in the year 1987 and obtained B.Ed. degree from Post Graduate Training College, Jorhat in 1987. Enrolled in the Bar Council of Assam in 1987 and practised at Jorhat District Court for a period of one year. Joined Assam Judicial Service on 01.12.1988 and since then worked in different capacity like Chief Judicial Magistrate (Kamrup) Guwahati, District & Sessions Judge, (Kamrup) Guwahati, Principal Judge, Family Court, Guwahati, Registrar Judicial, Registrar Administration and Registrar General of Gauhati High Court and promoted to selection grade on 04.12.2014 w.e.f. 11.01.2013.

Lastly worked as a District and Sessions Judge, Dibrugarh. Elevated to Bench of Additional Judge, Gauahti High Court on 07.01.2015. Became permanent Judge w.e.f. 06.01.2019. Retired on 30.06.2022.

 

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Songkhupchung Serto

Born on 1st March, 1961 at Sagang Village, Churachandpur District, Manipur. Completed graduation from St. Anthony’s College, Shillong (NEHU) and obtained LL.B. Degree from Law Faculty, Delhi University. Enrolled as an Advocate in 20.02.1986 and joined Manipur Judicial Service, Grade - III on 16.05.1992 after practicing Law for more than 6 years at Bar. Promoted to MJS Grade – II on 10.12.1997. Served at all the Districts of Manipur, except Chandel and Bishnupur. Deputed to Imphal Bench of the Gauhati High Court as Deputy Registrar (Judicial) on 29.09.2011. Appointed as Registrar of the same Bench on 19.03.2012 after promotion to MJS Grade – I. Appointed as the first Registrar General of the High Court of Manipur on 25.07.2013 after the High Court of Manipur came into existence and when the post of Registrar General was sanctioned. Elevated as Additional Judge of High Court of Manipur on 14th March, 2016. Transferred to Gauhati High Court and took oath as Additional Judge, Gauhati High Court on 3rd October, 2016. Appointed as Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 12.03.2018. Retired on 28.02.2023.

Hon’ble Mr. Justice Prasanta Kumar Deka
Tenure: 2016 - 2021

Born on 05.11.1959. Passed the Fifth Year (Electrical) Engineering Examination of the Integrated B.E. Course 1981 (held in October,1982) under Gauhati University from the Assam Engineering College, Jalukbari, Guwahati. Passed the Final Examination leading to the degree of Bachelor of Law (LLB) under the Gauhati University held in the month of January, 1989 from the Government Law College, Guwahati. Served M/S Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation, Namrup, OIL Pipeline (HQ) Narengi for a short period and joined in Assam State Electricity Board (A.S.E.B), Kahilipara, 132 EHV Grid Sub Station in the month of November, 1984 as Assistant Engineer and took voluntary retirement as Assistant Executive Engineer in November, 1995 from the A.S.E.B. Enrolled as an Advocate under the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh on 19.01.1996. Concentrated practice in the Civil side both in the Lower Judiciary and the Gauhati High Court. Sworn in as an Additional Judge of Gauhati High Court on 15.11.2016. Became permanent Judge w.e.f. 12.11.2018. Currently serving as President of Assam State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.

 

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Hitesh Kumar Sarma
Tenure: 2017 - 2022

Justice Hitesh Kumar Sarma was born on 1st July, 1960 at Pathsala, Assam, did his schooling in Bajali HS & MP School, Pathsala, completed his graduation in Arts from Bajali College, Pathshala, in the year 1981 and did LL.B from JB Law College, Guwahati, in the year 1985.

Prior to joining the Assam Judicial Service, as Judicial Magistrate at Tinsukia, on 08-12-1988, he joined the legal practice at Barpeta District Bar. He joined the Gauhati High Court, Guwahati as Deputy Registrar, on promotion. In the year 2005, he was posted as Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Guwahati), promoted as Additional District & Sessions Judge (FTC), in the year 2006 and posted at Kamrup, Guwahati. During the period from April, 2007 to 1st week of February, 2011 worked in the Gauhati High Court as Registrar (Judicial), Registrar (Administration) and as Registrar (Vigilance). On transfer, posted as District Judge, Sivasagar, thereafter, served as District & Sessions Judge, Goalpara and Kamrup (Metro). In June, 2012, appointed as Registrar General of the Gauhati High Court and then deputed to the Government of Assam as Legal Remembrancer and Secretary, Judicial Department, Government of Assam. Thereafter, posted as Special Judge, CBI and NIA, Assam. In the year 2015 again, he was posted as Registrar General of the Gauhati High Court and continued to be the Registrar General till his elevation as Additional Judge, Gauhati High Court on 19-05-2017. Became permanent Judge w.e.f. 25.04.2019.

Justice Sarma was a Super Time Scale District Judge before his elevation to the Gauhati High Court as Additional Judge. During the period 2013-2016, he was the President of the Assam Judicial Service Officers Association. Retired on 30.06.2022.

Hon’ble Mr. Justice Mir Alfaz Ali
Tenure: 2017 - 2021

Born on 21.04.1959, at village Ekrabari in the district of Udalguri, Assam (erstwhile Darrang District). Justice Mir Alfaz Ali completed his schooling from Kharupetia High School and obtained Bachelors degree in Economics (Honours) from Mangaldoi College in the year 1978. After obtaining MA and LLB degree from Gauhati University, he enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Tripura on 16.08.1985 followed by practice in Mangaldoi District Court till the month of May, 1989. Joined the Assam Judicial service on 30.06.1989. He was promoted to Grade I of Assam Judicial Service in the month of October 2007. He has worked as the District & Sessions Judge of Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Nalbari and Kamrup(Metro), Member MACT and Presiding Officer State Transport Appellate Tribunal Guwahati, Member Secretary Assam State Legal Services Authority, Secretary Gauhati High Court Mediation Monitoring Committee, Director, Judicial Academy Assam, Registrar (Judicial) and as Registrar (Vigilance)of the Gauhati High Court. Sri Ali has been elevated as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 19.05.2017. Became permanent Judge w.e.f. 25.04.2019. Presently, Justice Ali is serving as Director, Judicial Academy, Assam.

Hon’ble Mr. Justice S. Hukato Swu
Tenure: 2019 - 2021

Shri S. Hukato Swu, son of Late Scato Swu, Born at Satakha on 01.01.1960. Did his schooling from Goalpara Sainik School Assam, did his college from St. Anthony's College Shillong, obtained LLB Degree in 1986 from Delhi University Campus Law Centre- I, Delhi.
Appointed as Assistant Public Prosecutor cum Government Pleader in 1986. Appointed as Magistrate 1st Class cum Civil Judge Junior in 1990. Later promoted on 2003 as ADC (Judicial). Appointed as DC (Judicial) in 2004.
Served as Member Secretary NSLSA, Special Judge Anti - Corruption, TDP Vigilance, Election Tribunal (Municipal), Member MACT, Special Judge CBI, Special Judge NIA, President Consumer Redresal Forum and Principal Judge Family Court.
Was serving as Principal District & Sessions Judge till his elevation on 26.11.2019 as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court. Became permanent Judge w.e.f. 05.11.2021. Retired on 31.12.2021.

 

 

Hon’ble Mr. Justice Nani Tagia
Tenure: 2018 - 2023

Born on 16.05.1969. Did schooling from Govt. Higher Secondary School, Ziro, Lower Subansiri District, Arunachal Pradesh. B.A. from Govt. College, Itanagar (Arunachal University). LL.B. from Campus Law Centre (Delhi University). Designated as Senior Advocate by the Gauhati High Court on 04.08.2014. Elevated as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 19.11.2018. Became permanent Judge w.e.f. 10.11.2020. Transferred to Patna High Court and took oath on 01.11.2023. 

Hon’ble Mr. Justice Ajit Borthakur
Tenure: 2016 - 2023

Born on 01-12-1961, he did his M.A, LL.B from Gauhati University. He joined in Grade-III of Assam Judicial Service and initially appointed as Munshiff-cum-Judicial Magistrate at Silchar on 03-12-1988. He was promoted to Grade-II of Assam Judicial Service and worked as Deputy Registrar, Gauhati High Court, from 25-05-2001 to 14-11-2005. He was promoted to adhoc Grade-I of Assam Judicial Service and joined as Additional District & Sessions Judge (F.T.C.) at Nagaon on 01-11-2006 and then regularized in the same grade of the service from 04-02-2008. He worked as District & Sessions Judge, Sivasagar from 30-06-2008 to 02-02-2011, Registrar (vigilance), Gauhati High Court from 03-02-2011 to 02-03-2012, District & Sessions Judge Sonitpur, Tezpur from 07-03-2012 to 28-01-2015 and District & Sessions Judge, Kamrup (M), Guwahati from 02-02-2015. He was promoted to the Selection Grade of Grade-I of Assam Judicial Service from 04-02-2013 and as the super time scale District & Sessions Judge from 05-02-2016. Elevated as Additional Judge of Gauhati High Court on 15-11-2016. Became permanent Judge w.e.f. 12.11.2018.

Born on 15th December, 1961 and having obtained the qualification of Post Graduation in Economics and LL.B, joined the Bar in Guwahati on 06.09.1988, designated as Senior Advocate on 04.08.2014 and appointed as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 15.11.2016. Educated in St. Mary's School, Guwahati in Lower Primary, Don Bosco School, Guwahati in Upper Primary, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Guwahati in Secondary and Senior Secondary, Utkal University for Graduation, Gauhati University for Post Graduation and Government Law College, Guwahati under Gauhati University for LL.B. Practiced mainly in the writ side, also attended to Civil Appeals and Revisions, Criminal Appeals and Revisions, Arbitration Petitions and Company Petitions etc. Attended Civil Courts, Central Administrative Tribunal, Armed Forces Tribunal. Attended different Judicial Enquiry Commissions on behalf of prejudicially affected persons, State Government and also on behalf of the Commission respectively. Appeared in arbitration proceedings and also conducted arbitration proceedings as an Arbitrator. Appointed as Panel Advocate of Government of Assam and also of Oil India Limited. Appointed as Junior Government Advocate of the Government of Assam on 27.06.2001 and Senior Government Advocate of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh on 04.08.2014. Became permanent Judge w.e.f. 12.11.2018.
